Meet the Maker: Octō and Co

-

Interview with Octo

Our Meet the Maker series takes you behind the scenes with artisans and small businesses whose handcrafted products bring warmth, relaxation, and character to our bundles. This month, we’re thrilled to introduce Octō, a family-run fragrance brand founded by Ieva and François in 2017, beginning with humble candle-pouring sessions in their own kitchen. Their deep passion for natural, sustainable candles grew into a mission to craft products that bring calm, nostalgia, and connection into everyday life. Now operating from a peaceful South London studio, Octō ’s commitment to quality, sustainability, and authenticity shines through every scent.

What inspired you to start Octō?

Octō was born out of a deep passion for craftsmanship and a love for natural, sustainable living. I wanted to create something that not only smelled incredible but also aligned with my values of using eco-friendly, non-toxic ingredients. The inspiration really came from a desire to make candles that people could feel good about using in their homes—products that contribute to a sense of well-being without harming the environment. I also wanted each Octō candle to tell a story, to evoke emotion and connection through scent.

What does an average working day look like for you?

No two days are exactly the same, but generally, my day starts early with a bit of planning and organising, often surrounded by the fragrances we’re working on. My time is divided between product development, checking in with suppliers, overseeing production, and working on the more creative aspects, like designing new scents or collaborating with stockists.

There’s also a lot of engagement with our customers, which I love—hearing their feedback and seeing how our candles become a part of their lives. The afternoons might involve diving into the business side of things, like logistics or strategy, but I always make time for a hands-on role in crafting and testing our products.

What gets you out of bed in the morning?

The idea of creating something that brings joy and calm to people’s lives is a huge motivator. I love the process of experimenting with new blends, working with natural ingredients, and finding that perfect balance in a scent. Knowing that what we create has the power to turn someone’s space into a sanctuary is incredibly fulfilling. The connection we have with our customers, who really appreciate the ethos behind Octō, is also a huge part of what drives me. I get excited about the next steps we can take to improve, innovate, and share our products with more people.

How do you zone out from the world?

I love to escape into nature—there’s something about the simplicity and tranquility of it that helps me reset. Whether it’s a walk through a forest, a seaside escape, or just spending time in a garden, I find it grounding.

On a more personal level, lighting one of our own candles at home and getting lost in a book or some calming music really helps me unwind. It’s like the products I create for others end up helping me too!

If someone wanted to turn their passion into a business, what would be the one piece of advice you’d give them?

My biggest piece of advice would be to stay authentic to your vision and your values. It’s easy to get caught up in trends or external pressures, but building something you truly believe in will keep you motivated even through the tough times. Also, don’t be afraid to start small and evolve—refine your craft, listen to feedback, and keep learning as you grow. A passion-based business thrives when it has heart, and people can sense that authenticity.
