give yourself kindness interview

In this month’s Meet the Makers interview, we’re excited to introduce Rachel, founder of Give Yourself Kindness. Driven by a mission to help you make a positive impact on how you feel and sleep, Rachel’s brand offers thoughtfully crafted tools designed to support well-being. With guidance backed by professionals, Give Yourself Kindness encourages a gentle shift in self-talk—treating yourself with the same kindness you’d offer to a friend. Join us as we dive into Rachel's journey, her daily rituals, and the inspiration behind her beautiful affirmations and wellness products.

What inspired you to start Give Yourself Kindness?

Give Yourself Kindness is about sharing that you are allowed to give yourself the same kindness you give to others—and it is also okay to find it hard sometimes. I did, and I was on the lookout for something to help but only found tools that felt unhelpful and made my critical voice louder. I had read how powerful journaling could be, but a blank page felt overwhelming—"was I not good enough because I didn’t know what to say?" No!

I had also read that focusing on gratitude could be helpful, but most journals only offered a "1, 2, 3" list. Some days, facing that same list felt hard—"was I an ungrateful person?" No! Or there would be a "1, 2, 3" list of things I had achieved that day, which I understand can be helpful—we all do achieve so much—but with just a number and a line, I found myself wondering, "what have I achieved? Is that too small to put down?...maybe I should have done more."

I knew there had to be a better way—a place of curiosity, not judgment. A place to allow whatever happened in our day, and support us to see both the sunshine and the rain. A place to know that no emotion—like the weather—lasts forever.

What inspired the creation of your affirmation cards? How do you use them in your own daily life?

My favourite place to keep them is where I sit to work. The mind can be tricky sometimes, and I want to share that experiencing an inner critic is normal—but having a tool to help with gentle, constant reminders can make a real difference. I also felt that so many affirmation cards promote forced positivity, and science has shown this can be unhelpful. I wanted to bring together affirmations with self-compassion to disrupt the inner critic and inspire instead.

What’s your go-to self-care hack when you're feeling overwhelmed and want to feel more grounded?

I think every time is different, but at the moment, I’m really finding a lot of support from supportive touch. Putting my hand on my heart or my hand and taking a moment to feel the touch.

Tell me about one personal wellness ritual you couldn’t live without?

Nature and being close to the soil. I absolutely love making compost; it really helps me acknowledge the cycles of everything. Nature is just amazing—out of plants that look very sad, the most magical compost can be created, and that compost will grow the next year's plants. It’s amazing!
